In Nunn's Chess Endings, Volume 1, renowned endgame theoretician John Nunn teaches the skills that are most important to success in practical endgames. Going beyond standard texts, Dr Nunn shows how to apply knowledge of standard endgames to find the right methods in tricky real-life practical situations - even when they differ greatly from the idealized forms given by traditional endgame manuals.

Reviews in Brief
We mortals play for fun, for sport, sometimes for motives pathological, but at the highest level, every game, sometimes every move, has a story.
That introduction is on my mind because it is a natural counterpoint to the absolutely marvelous biography of Jose Raul Capablanca produced by Isaak and Vladimir Linder. Alekhine, of course, was in many ways to Capablanca what Fischer was to the Soviet school, or Kasparov to Karpov: the fanatic warrior-monk who prepared his whole life to wrest the world crown from the apparently unbeatable predecessor. So to read the life of Capablanca is to read the story of one of the great gentlemen of the game, but also to witness the first of the many titanic struggles that enrich our history.
There are eighty-nine games or game fragments in 233 pages of main text, a respectable number of games, and reason enough to consider this book. But each game comes set within its context, something even Frank Brady did not do with Fischer's life, which gives the reader a sense of what was at stake in each game.
