Book Notes

The advice frequently given to chess-players eager to improve their results is straightforward: study tactics! But there is often little useful guidance as to how this is best done. Few books present a structured approach to tactics, so A Course in Chess Tactics fills a valuable niche in the ambitious player's library. The authors present each major tactical theme in turn, explaining how it works and providing inspiring examples. They then explain how you can spot the idea in your own games and use it to your advantage. There are also challenging exercises throughout the book, with detailed solutions. The second part of the book takes us inside the professional's tactics laboratory. Here we see how tactical themes are combined, and employed to achieve strategic goals.

Genius in the Background introduces brilliant chess that will be unfamiliar to even well-read chess players. Twelve chess stars are profiled with examples of their greatest achievements, but these stars are not famous - they are geniuses who stay in the background. Top players such as Kasparov and Topalov may be famous names to chess fans, but they did not become World Champions without great help - two of their coaches are profiled in this book and provide insights into the education of a chess champion.

Reviews in Brief

Magic of Chess Tactics
by Claus Dieter Meyer and Karsten Mueller

Prepare to be dazzled and challenged in this superb transformation of Mueller and Meyer's book The Magic of Chess Tactics to Fritz Trainer format. Mueller presents thirty-eight video lectures that highlight the creativity of some of the greatest magicians of the chessboard: Fischer, Shirov, Topalov, Bronstein, Tal, Nezhtmetdinov, and many others. Combine this with Mueller's entertaining and dynamic style and you come away with a high-quality production.

One of best ways to improve your tactical ability is to roll-up one's sleeves and get down to business solving puzzles. You can sit back and enjoy these fabulous lectures, but I suspect Mueller will soon make you feel guilty. He often stops during the presentation to ask what would you do in a given position. His question is followed by a pause, and just when you think he's about to reveal the solution, he will say "go ahead, take your time." You simply marvel at the creativity of the magicians or take the opportunity to improve your tactical skills. Some video lectures can provide a full day's tactical workout ...

Overall, this is a superb production from Mueller, Meyer, and the ChessBase team. Along with King's PowerPlay series and Mikhalchishin's The Secret Weapons of the Champions, Magic of Chess Tactics is among my favorite Fritz Trainers of all time.
