Here & There The Art of It One often hears that chess is an art, not a science, and that chess offers its followers beauty. Pachman's Verdict The Sveshnikov is a sound system that is relatively easy to understand, but there are other systems that are easier to learn. Dangerous Brains In some respects Luke McShane's new career will certainly be preferable to that of a professional chess player. Morphy's Ledger Column From August 6, 1859 until August 4, 1860, Paul Morphy "conducted the Chess Department" in the New York Ledger. Hurry Up and Get It If you understand the Scheveningen variation, you will also understand many other openings. Carlsen-Karjakin, Blitz 2009 Today's two-part video features the game Carlsen-Karjakin, World Blitz Championship 2009. Book Notes In recent years the Scandinavian has been catapulted into the limelight, and it has now firmly established itself as an opening to be reckoned with. Moreover, it is easy to play! In the majority of lines Black relies upon the same system of development, and there is still relatively little theory when compared to mainline defenses to 1 e4. One further attraction is that it can lead to both tactical and positional play - there is something to suit all styles of player. Opening expert Jovanka Houska has successfully played both sides of the Scandinavian, and in Starting Out: The Scandinavian she reveals everything you need to know, whether you are playing it as Black or facing it with White. In the new book Bxh7+, David Rudel delivers a work aimed at all chess players. Bxh7+ is not so much a book, but a training kit demystifying Greco's sacrifice. Any serious player can now attain fluency with this tactic. Five easy lessons present essential guidelines, tools, and tips for both attackers and defenders. Also, just in is Rudel's expanded edition of Zuke 'Em. Newsletter subscribers who order Starting Out: The Scandinavian and The Scandinavian: The Easy Way (2nd ed. DVD) can save $5.00 off their order. Weekly Puzzle | | Quote of the Week | White to Move/Solution Below | | Playing chess at a professional level demands extreme concentration, intensity, and a complete absorption in another, artificial world. Genna Sosonko Russian Silhouettes | Reviews in Brief The Scheveningen Sicilian by Lubomir Ftacnik The Slovakian grandmaster Lubomir Ftacnik begins this DVD by modestly telling the viewer that he will attempt to explain the ideas behind this fascinating line in the Sicilian, and that he will be happy if he accomplishes this goal, because he is constantly surprised by the new ideas that keep emerging, even though he has played the opening for many years. He also states that if you understand the Scheveningen variation, you will also understand many other openings, as the pawn structure and typical ideas share several similarities. While it is impossible to cover all of the lines in this strategically complex variation of the Sicilian Defense, even in seven hours, Ftacnik takes an amazingly thorough and deep stab at it, methodically explaining the typical ideas, and often using games that I had never seen before. This DVD is remarkably good. It is an absolute must-see for anyone playing the Open Sicilian as white or the lines without …g7-g6 as black. You will, as I have, walk away with a deeper understanding and knowledge about navigating these complex positions, which can be incredibly difficult to understand without proper guidance.
