He recommends that beginners take chances because “failure is likely to teach much more than success. Failure is painful and memorable. Success discourages critical thinking.” The Latvian Gambit According to Stefan Buecker, Black may not have compensation for the pawn deficit in the Latvian Gambit after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 f5 3 Nxe5, but he usually can hope for complications. Fight of Giants Long before the time of organized chess tournaments, and before there were any chess magazines to report on important events, a historic meeting took place between four of the world’s strongest players. Rod Edwards reports in The Skittles Room. Book Notes On the new DVD, The Philidor Defense, Alexei Shirov spends almost six hours discussing his own games in this opening, as well as presenting the current state of theory, including how best to meet the Shirov Gambit with 5.g4. The natural place to begin on this DVD is with the introductory videos by GMs Karsten Mueller and Dorian Rogozenco. Mueller introduces the various training content and looks at the decisive game from Nalchik. He also touches upon Rainer Knaak’s opening trap column and two opening articles of note: Kuzmin’s repertoire suggestion against the Caro-Kann and Postny’s surprise weapon against the Scotch. In his first video, Rogozenco reviews the tournament highlights of recent months, including a win by the new European champion Evgeny Tomashesvky, Jobava’s victory over Volokitin, and Kotronias win against Grigoriants. He also mentions the Women’s European Championship and the Women’s FIDE Grand Prix in Istanbul. In his second video, Rogozenco demonstrates the decisive moments from the game between Aronian and Ivanchuk. He also discusses the finish of the Bundesliga season and the Russian team championship. From the latter event, Rogozenco singles out a win by Fabiano Caruana, who had a terrific result of five points from six games. Another highlight of this issue includes Anand’s analysis of his first round game against Teimour Radjabov in Linares. He annotates his victory in the Sicilian Sveshnikov Variation move by move in audio format and explains the ideas behind Radjabov’s new move 18...f5. He also closely examines the endgame with queen, rook and knight against queen, rook and bishop. Other regular features include the columns Strategy, Move by Move, Endgames, Tactics, Opening Traps, Fritztrainer, and ICCF Tele-chess, which includes more than 1,000 games. There are also twelve opening surveys, including Marin on the Dutch Defense [A86] and Ruy Lopez [C93], Stohl on the Benko Gambit [A57], Grivas on the Queen’s Gambit [D38], Krasenkow on the Gruenfeld Defence [D98-99], and many more. Plus the new products sections features previews from Alexei Shirov, Andrew Martin and Lubomir Ftacnik. | |
| | Fischer World Champion! by Max Euwe & Jan Timman The third English edition of Fischer World Champion!, a translation from the original 1972 Dutch edition, opens with a tribute to Fischer, new to this edition, from the one person whom many believe to be Fischer’s superior - Garry Kasparov Kasparov notes how he was influenced by Fischer’s play and laments his withdrawal from the chess world. But he concludes this chapter by remarking, “We can either thank Fischer for what he gave, or curse him for what he failed to give, and I much prefer the former.” In “A breathtaking model,” a new chapter added to this third edition, Jan Timman notes the reverence with which he held Fischer. “I invariably did my best to lay my hands on his games as quickly as I could.” He goes on to discuss his rather brief encounter with Fischer in 1990, in Brussels. Fischer World Champion! will provide you with hours of enjoyment, thanks to the play of the championship contenders themselves, and to the illuminating commentary from Jan Timman. Most serious chess players will have already played through these games many times, but Timman’s annotations only add to the joy of replaying them yet again.
