In a topsy-turvy fourth game, Alexandra Kosteniuk came out on top to score a draw and win the 14th World Women’s Championship with a 2.5-1.5 final match win over Hou Yifan of China. Also, GM Leonid Kritz of Germany has taken the clear lead in the SPICE Cup (September 19-28, Lubbock, TX) with 2.5/3. Check out game highlights, standings and links.

Book Notes

Dvoretsky’s Analytical Manual takes its place next to the author’s classic work on endings, Dvoretsky’s Endgame Manual, as being one of the great chess books of the modern era, a book from which the serious student may take his or her knowledge and understanding of complex middlegame ideas to the next level. It has just been released and is shipping now!

Magnus Carlsen continues to storm ahead and stun the world. Mercilessly exploiting all his chances, the 17-year-old demolished the opposition in Foros and gained enough rating points with his 2881 performance to become the unofficial number two in the world. Read all about it in New in Chess Magazine, 2008/5.

In February 1909, nineteen of the world’s best chessplayers gathered to play in one of the strongest tournaments of that era. World Champion Emanuel Lasker annotated all 175 games for the tournament book, St. Petersburg 1909, which is now available for the first time in algebraic notation.

Reviews in Brief

Chess Explained: The Nimzo-Indian
by Reinaldo Vera

Vera advocates the Nimzo-Indian because of its logic and simplicity. He writes that “with his first three moves Black obeys the most important opening principles: development, control of the centre and preparation for castling, to ensure the safety of the king,” all while “retaining great flexibility regarding his eventual setup and structure.”

In all there are twenty-six games: three each on the Samisch, Fianchetto, and Leningrad variations; nine in the Rubinstein system; and eight in the Capablanca variation. Each section begins with a brief introduction and ends with a short conclusion outlining the plans and move orders, etc. This book provides a decent overview of “one of the defences richest in positional ideas,” and is a fine place to begin your own investigations.

Play the Slav
James Vigus

This book concentrates on the “pure Slav”: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5, though the author also examines various third, fourth, and fifth move alternatives. In fact, aside from the 34-page introduction, the longest chapter of the book is devoted to the Errot: 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bg4 (31 pages), the second longest is the Sokolov Defense (29 pages). Vigus writes that Sokolov is “a model for anyone who aspires to play the Slav.”

Vigus recommends the Slav as an opening “whose evaluation is unlikely to fluctuate much as new games are played.” He credits the Slav as being instrumental to Kramnik’s victory over Topalov in their 2006 match and notes that the opening “had not faced such a test since the Alekhine-Euwe match in 1935.”

In the lengthy introduction, Vigus strives to convince the reader that the Slav is not boring and “that you can play it to win”; consequently, “a counterattacking philosophy is evident throughout this book.” He presents his own analysis, revives forgotten ideas, and offers improvements over existing theory to make this a commendable opening book.
