Book Notes

In Garry Kasparov on Modern Chess, Part 2: Kasparov vs. Karpov 1975-1985, Kasparov analyzes his first encounters with Karpov, from a 1975 simultaneous display through his first two world championship matches, all in astonishing detail!

Chess Assistant 10 is a unique tool for managing chess games and databases, playing chess via the Internet, analyzing games, or playing chess against the computer. The Starter Package includes Rybka 3, Chess Opening Encyclopedia 2008, a database of 3,300,000 games, and more.

In February 1909, nineteen of the world’s best chessplayers gathered to play in one of the strongest tournaments of that era. World Champion Emanuel Lasker annotated all 175 games for the tournament book, St. Petersburg 1909, which is now available for the first time in algebraic notation.

Reviews in Brief

ChessCafe Puzzle Book 2
by Karsten Mueller

This book is designed to improve your positional intuition. Mueller remarks in the introduction that it is easier to find books on tactical exercises, because it is so much easier to find suitable tactical examples, especially with the assistance of computers. However, “with positional exercises, different computer programs may favor different moves and completely disagree about the evaluation of a given position.”

The book begins with a sixty-six page section of motifs, where a particular theme is outlined, followed by a number of examples from practical play, and then a few exercises on that theme are presented. Topics include good and bad bishops, outposts, improving piece placement, prophylaxis, counterplay, positional exchange sacrifices, and much more.

The second section comprises twenty tests, each with sixteen puzzles to solve. Points are gained for correct answers, as well as for near misses or interesting tries, and a score chart is provided to assess your “positional Elo.” The solutions then follow in a third section that spans 121 pages. The solutions are fully annotated and the diagrams are plentiful.

Solving puzzles is a great way to improve your chess and Mueller has done a superlative job in creating a positional puzzle book. It is also available in CD format.

Starting Out: Accelerated Dragon
Andrew Greet

Greet writes that “the aim of this book is to provide the reader with everything he needs to begin playing either side of the Accelerated Dragon with confidence.” He notes that he does not assume the reader has any prior knowledge about the opening, and that he endeavors “to explain all of the fundamental principles as lucidly as possible,” while also providing experienced players “a number of original ideas and analyses.”

The introduction offers a brief history of the opening, an outline of the author’s experience with it, as well as and an overview of the first few moves and how it compares with the standard Dragon.

Certain authors seem to be able to encompass more than just the subject matter at hand, and Greet is one of them. So not only will you learn a lot about the Accelerated dragon, you’ll also pick up quite a bit about chess in general.
