New at Chess Life Online

IM Ray Robson and GM Darmen Sadvakasov tied for first in the Miami Open. Ray lost to the Kazakh GM in the last round, but went on to defeat Darmen in the Armageddon. Marc Esserman also had an awesome result. Also, CLO editor Jennifer Shahade blogs on playing for Philly against her former teamates in the U.S. Chess League, calling bluffs, and Kosteniuk’s win in game one of the World Women Champs Final.

Book Notes

The 2009 International Chess Calendar is now available. It offers vintage photos, chess history, trivia, selected games, as well as dates of birth and death and major events. Plus, each month the “Chronicles” feature looks back at what was going on in the chess world 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago.

The Chess Assistant 2008 Chess Databases package includes a main database of 3,300,000 current until January 1, 2008 and a correspondence database of 376,450 games from 1973 to 2005. Additionally, there are 36,000 annotated games in Chess Assistant format, an encyclopedia of players, and more.

In February 1909, nineteen of the world’s best chessplayers gathered to play in one of the strongest tournaments of that era. World Champion Emanuel Lasker annotated all 175 games for the tournament book, St. Petersburg 1909, which is now available for the first time in algebraic notation.

Reviews in Brief

Chess Mazes 2
by Bruce Alberston

In Chess Mazes 2, Bruce Alberston presents 216 new chess maze puzzles for your enjoyment. A chess maze is a puzzle in which only white gets to move, using only the maze piece. For bishop, rook, and knight mazes the object is to put the black king in check, without moving to a square that would put the maze piece en prise. For queen, pawn, and king mazes, the object is to checkmate the black king.

Alberston originally designed chess mazes to help his students learn how the pieces move and to be aware of when the moving piece can be taken by the opposition. However, he soon discovered an ancillary benefit was that the mazes built the foundation for visualization and planning techniques.

Whatever your motivation, chess mazes are great fun. They challenge the student to think and to solve concrete problems with a definite solution. This sort of problem solving can be applied to many more areas than just chess, and so Chess Mazes 2 can be heartily recommended.
