Book Notes
The Alterman Gambit Guide: White Gambits is an instructional manual for improving players. Sharpen your tactics and learn to play dynamic attacking chess while studying the most entertaining gambits. Lines covered include: Evans Gambit, Panov Attack, Morra Gambit, Philidor, Danish Gambit, Urusov Gambit, Morphy Attack, Cochrane Gambit, Max Lange Attack and Milner-Barry Gambit. This is not a high-level theoretical work, but an instructional book for juniors and other players starting out. "Alterman isn't offering a White-to-move-and-win tome, though I believe that the book's quality will give its readers lots of free points... Alterman's emphasis is pedagogical, and I believe he succeeds in this task." - IM John Donaldson
Most chess fans believe that knowledge of the opening, middlegame and endgame is what separates grandmasters from everyone else. While all of these are important, the truth is much more profound: Top players all have a deep insight into how to think about chess in ways that most players have never heard of. On The Secret to Chess DVD, Maurice Ashley reveals a simple idea that will forever change the way that you see chess. He shares the secret he discovered on his path to the grandmaster title.

Reviews in Brief
Rybka 4
by ChessBase
Instead of playing against computers, we use computers to help us beat our opponents. Instead of science geeks building computers that play chess, we have chess geeks that build software to give us insight into the correct moves in any given position. We have gone from the era of Big Blue to the time of Rybka. Programmed by IM Vasik Rajilch of Czechoslovakia, "little fish" or Rybka in Czech, has become the top computer engine in the world. It should come as no surprise that the ChessBase GUI is the same interface as used for Fritz 12, Shredder 12, or any of their other engines.
In the past, engines were mostly used as an always available chess partner to play against. Now they have become study tools to assist the users learning process. Rybka 4 will certainly become your default engine kibitzer and you will rely on its results with few reservations.
I don't think I have to summarize this review by telling you that I love Rybka 4. However, I have to admit that when it comes time to upgrade my PC, I will do so with the specifications for Deep Rybka 4 in mind. For now I am more than satisfied with the results that I have been getting from my new favorite chess engine: Rybka 4 by ChessBase. I just can't imagine it getting any better than this.
