Book Notes
The Chess Olympiad held in Dresden 2008 was a spectacular gathering of the world's chess nations - with a line-up of 1270 registered players representing 146 teams in the 'open' tournament and 111 teams in the women's event. Fighting for the honour of their respective countries as well as for their own personal reputations, competitors from all over the globe were more determined than ever to play the best chess of their lives. Olympiad United! not only presents the most interesting games and other chess highlights of the 38th Chess Olympiad but also includes interviews and behind-the-scenes chat from players, coaches and observers alike. Among the contributors to this souvenir volume are those who had themselves been playing for gold medals on the stage in front of large crowds of spectators and others who could be proud of their individual achievements or whose teams performed above expectations. These players not only comment on the action at the board but also reveal their private pre-match preparation and post-mortem analysis.

Reviews in Brief
Mammoth Book of Chess
by Graham Burgess
There are many chess books written for beginning players, even more for intermediate and advanced players, and a few publications from which masters can learn. To an extent, The Mammoth Book of Chess tries to appeal to each of these audiences.
In fact, in his introduction, author FM Graham Burgess writes, "I have written this book in such a way that it provides inspiration and useful information for everyone with an interest in chess, from total beginners to grandmasters."
While not many titled players will likely find this book indispensable, there is much to recommend here for beginning and intermediate players. At 570 pages, it is indeed quite a mammoth production, and it covers plenty of ground.
The Mammoth Book of Chess is well suited to the beginning player who has the motivation to improve. There is enough challenging material (most of the puzzles especially) for the intermediate player. At a cost of under three cents per page, I would suggest this is a great buy for new players and those rated up to about 1800.
