Reviews in Brief
A Course in Chess Tactics
by Dejan Bojkov and Vladimir Georgiev
Go figure - an unimaginatively blunt title; yet a book filled with page after page of sharp and concise tools?
No doubt, chess experts (and students of military history) know the difference between strategy and tactics. In fact, the mere sight of the word - "tactics" - and visions of knight forks, pins, and attacking the fianchetto spring instantly to mind.
Not so for average players. You learn how the pieces move, and perhaps arrive at some crude understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a few openings. But then the sphinx-like nature of the game can create an illusion - the illusion of thinking you're ready for "the next step."
To understand what A Course in Chess Tactics offers doesn't require a Kasparov-like imagination. My plan is to run the course, focusing on a chapter a week, which means I should see the results by Christmas. If I can stay on track and complete the course, my beard should have grown long enough by then for me to play Santa at the chessboard, pulling gifts out of my bag. "Here you are, my friend - a tactically proficient beat down!"
And that's why you gotta appreciate books like this. Practical and concise, whether you're a student looking to improve, or a rusty highly-rated player in need of a little basic exercise, A Course in Chess Tactics ought to help you get from here to there.
