Book Notes In August 2008 Andres D. Hortillosa entered the New England Masters. It was a brave choice for an unrated player to compete in such a tough event, but it proved to be an inspired decision; he exceeded all expectations and was rewarded with a FIDE international rating of 2199. This, however, was no overnight success; it was the result of systematic work. How did he achieve such outstanding improvement? The answer lies in Improve Your Chess at Any Age. Hortillosa believes that a chessplayer can improve at any age as long as he or she is inspired with the right attitude and enabled with the right thinking processes. In this original and thought-provoking book, Hortillosa explains his ever-evolving system of chess improvement and discusses methods of preparation. His system works and now he is divulging his secrets. The Alekhine is arguably the most forcing and aggressive reply to 1 e4. Black immediately forces the pace and drags the game onto his own favored territory. This strategy is not without risk, but those who specialize in the Alekhine find that the opening has a real practical sting and quick-strike potential. Play the Alekhine, by Valentin Bogdanov, describes the main positional and tactical themes unique to the Alekhine, and the principal directions of play in modern practice. Hortillosa Improve Your Chess at Any Age | Reviews in Brief Chess Exam: You vs. Bobby Fischer by Igor Khmelnitsky There is no shortage of chess puzzle books to help aspiring players improve their tactical vision, and most are pretty good at meeting this goal. International master Igor Khmelnitsky has added a couple of twists to this genre in Chess Exam: Matches Against Chess Legends, You vs. Bobby Fischer. Rather than present a series of "White to win" or "Black to move and mate in two" problems, Khmelnitsky provides the reader with dynamic positions from various Fischer games. He indicates what Fischer's last move was, producing the given position. The reader plays the part of Fischer's opponent and is asked two questions. First, the reader must provide his evaluation of the position – is it roughly equal, is one side a bit better, or is one side significantly better. Secondly, the reader is asked to select his choice of move from among, typically, four choices, and asked to justify this move. Usually one or two of the choices are blunders, but this may not always be readily apparent. Chess Exam: Matches Against Chess Legends, You vs. Bobby Fischer is quite an informative and entertaining book. Khmelnitsky has gone to great lengths to identify challenging positions from Fischer's games and readers are likely to enjoy the opportunity to review the relevant portions of these games. The various statistical analyses are icing on the cake to rating-crazed chess fans. Read the full review here. | |
