Here & There
at ChessCafe.com

On the Side
The ending with material equality on one side, and an extra pawn on the other, is one of the most important, and also one of the most difficult segments of the general rook endgame. This month Mark Dvoretsky brings two instructive examples of this theme to your attention.

Christmas Books
In The Kibitzer this month, Tim Harding looks at an assortment of books that you might consider adding to your Christmas wish list, including Kasparov’s latest blockbuster and a title that will interest correspondence chess specialists.

World Youth
In his Scholastic Chess column, Steve Golberg reports on the 2008 World Youth Chess Championships in Vung Tau, Vietnam. The 28-player U.S. squad did quite well, including bronze medals for Sam Shankland and Darwin Yang, as well as an international master title for Shankland.

Reviews in Brief

Rybka 3 Aquarium
by Convekta Ltd.

Rybka Aquarium is a graphical user interface designed to take advantage of the full power of Rybka 3, the world’s strongest chess engine.

The developers purposefully geared the Aquarium interface towards serious players, with an emphasis on analysis functionality. There are a many different options such as infinite analysis, blunder check, game analysis, and interactive deep analysis (IDeA).

Yet beginning players will also find plenty to keep them busy too. For example, you can play material and rating handicap games, or Chess960, or against other players via the Internet on the Chess Planet server. In addition, Rybka Aquarium supports standard operations such as database handling, playing against the computer (with or without handicaps), hosting engine vs. engine matches and tournaments, and much more.

Rybka 3 Aquarium comes bundled with a database of 3,300,000 games, an opening book that can be used within the Fritz-family of applications, online access to the Nalimov endgame tablebases (3-6 pieces), and versions for 32 and 64 bit processors. Rybka’s opening book features grandmaster evaluations of more than 100,000 positions, as well as two analysis trees (CAP) containing previously analyzed positions. The Rybka CAP Data contains 20 million positions, while the CAP Data offers 45 million positions analyzed by Rybka and other engines.

Thus, Rybka 3 Aquarium offers many powerful tools for game analysis that will benefit serious competitors and many fun features for chess play that will please recreational users.

Chinese School of Chess
by Liu Wenzhe

The author was the first Chinese player to defeat a western GM and subsequently became China’s top trainer. Their successes have created two women’s world champions, a youngest GM at age 14, and an Olympiad team that competes at the highest levels. Such accomplishments warrant an interest in this book. It details the training methods that attained these results and offers extensive analysis of many games.

According to Wenzhe the principles used by the other schools (center, development, and tempo) are “all based on an inadequate understanding of chess.” The Chinese principles are strategy, structure, and space. However, it is questionable whether the Chinese “art of thinking” and “strategy of competition” will fundamentally change the way chess is played.
