ECF BOTY
In naming From London to Elista the English Chess Federation Book of the Year, the judges wrote it “gives a unique insight into world championship chess. Without doubt this is one of the most original and interesting books to have won the Book of the Year award.”

A vs. K
The World Championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik will be played in Bonn, Germany October 14 - November 2, 2008, and you’ll be able to watch the games via the Foidos Chess system at ChessCafe.com.

Book Notes

Many might consider the Nimzo-Larsen Attack to be of only surprise value, but IM Ilya Odessky believes it to be one of White’s more logical first moves. In Play 1.b3 he explains how White can undermine the black center and steer towards an open battle.

On the DVD Roman’s Lab, Volume 61: Art of Instant Attacks, GM Larry Christiansen demonstrates how to create instant violent attacks in your games. Larry examines all the moves and motifs that effect the enemy king’s position.

Dvoretsky’s Analytical Manual is a modern classic from which the serious student may take his or her knowledge and understanding of complex middlegame ideas to the next level.

Reviews in Brief

Starting Out: Sicilian Grand Prix Attack
by Gawain Jones

Jones asserts that the Grand Prix is an aggressive system against the Sicilian that avoids the main lines of theory and gives White positions that “can be played using general principles.” He focuses on positions where White either plays 3.f4 or 3.Bb5, noting that the older move order with 2.f4 gives Black a ’more enjoyable” position.

There are thirty-six complete games, with Jones on the white side in ten of them. His victims include star players such as Nijboer and Van Wely, while top players such as Topalov, Gelfand, and Leko can all be found on the losing side as black. This book is well written, and upon reading it you will be itching to give this opening a go!

This Crazy World of Chess
Larry Evans

Billed as “the most controversial chess book ever written,” this is a collection of 101 of Larry Evans’ chess columns. Evans notes that some of the columns have been expanded or updated and that they “run the gamut from humorous to bizarre, contemporary to historical.”

There are some photos and many of the columns contain a game or position, yet it is mostly a collection of stories detailing the many FIDE fiascos and various chess scandals that seem to plague the chess world. Serious and casual players alike can enjoy this “romp through the back door of chess.”
