New at Chess Life Online

GMs Sergey Erenburg and Alexander Stripunsky took first place in the Atlantic Open (D.C, August 22-24) with 4.5/5 each. The Atlantic Open had a great turnout including five GMs and over 400 entries. Also, in the first of a two-part series, Gary Kevin Ware shows us how to approach chess problems, the anatomy of a good mate in two and the dangers of using Fritz to check your solving.

Book Notes

In the new DVD, My Career, Vol. 1, Viswanathan Anand reflects on the very beginning of his career from when he first learned chess to his match against Kasparov in 1995. He shows games from the 1984 and 1987 World Championships for Juniors as well as games from the FIDE and PCA championship cycles.

My Career, Vol. 2, begins with Anand’s victory at the 2000 FIDE World Championship and ends with his winning the 2007 World Championship in Mexico City. He analyzes his best games and discusses the situation in the Bundesliga as well as Kasparov’s retirement from chess. Together these DVDs offer more than eight hours of video commentary and annotations.

Chess Mazes are designed to develop your visualization skills. In Chess Mazes 2, Bruce Alberston presents 216 new maze puzzles.
In the ChessCafe Puzzle Book 2, German grandmaster Dr. Karsten Mueller will help you develop your strategic chess playing skills.

Reviews in Brief

DGT960 Game Timer

The DGT960 is the world’s first folding chess clock. This single-time-control clock offers many features, including a one-button function to randomly create Chess960 positions, as well as bonus and delay modes.

The clock will automatically switch on or off when you open or close it, and the last setting used will be saved when switched off. You can also set it, if you wish, so that each player has a different amount of time, or so that each player has a certain amount of time available per move, or to count up from zero. The maximum time limit is nine hours and fifty-nine minutes.

Yet the coolest feature is the Chess960 button. When you push this button while the clock is running, it will quickly generate a Chess960 (or Fischer Random if you prefer) position, wherein the pieces are shuffled along the first rank. There are 960 possible positions, and it can be great fun exploring the new patterns and strategies that emerge.

Modern Chess Openings
Nick de Firmian

MCO was first published in 1911 and we have now reached its fifteenth incarnation. It has long been considered the bible for chess opening information. The target audience for MCO is most likely the beginning tournament player who needs a one-volume reference book to serve as a guide through the gamut of opening theory.

The last edition was published in 1999, and this one is said to reflect “the changes that have occurred in the openings along with the fundamental change brought on by the great progress of computer chess programs.” Yet, while some sections have been “completely revised and updated,” others remain as they were, which can probably be expected in a nearly 750 page work.

The material is divided into six sections of major opening groups, and each individual chapter begins with an introduction outlines the strategic concepts of the opening, along with historical information. The main lines are presented as a table-grid with alternatives, tricks, and traps given as footnotes.

De Firmian’s assistants for this edition are GM Fedorowicz, IM Sarkar, IM Lapshun, and John MacArthur. Whether you’re just discovering chess openings, or starting out in tournament practice, or simply need a one-volume opening reference, MCO will more than suit your needs.
