Reviews in Brief

The Chebanenko Slav according to Bologan
Victor Bologan

Vyacheslav Chebanenko is the Moldavian trainer who developed the variation 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 a6 in the Slav Defense into a full-fledged viable opening system. Alexey Shirov refers to him in the foreword as “one of the most remarkable trainers of all time,” and among his students were GMs such as Gavrikov, Rogozenko, and Bologan.

It is certainly a treat to have someone so closely associated with the birth of a variation to explain it in such detail! Bologan takes us from the time when the opening was still considered “a pointless waste of tempo” to the present day.

Included in the lengthy introduction is the original article “A New System in the Slav Defense” by Viktor Gavrikov, which was first published in Shakhmaty v SSSR No. 12, 1983, and extracts from the books Revolution in the 70s by Garry Kasparov and School of Chess Excellence 4 - Opening Developments by Mark Dvoretsky.

There are seven chapters; each features a different fifth move alternative for White. Lines that are not included are other fourth moves for White: 4.Qc2 and 4.e3 after 3.Nf3 or 3.Nc3, although Bologan does offer some brief advice in these instances.

The book concludes with thirty-four middlegame test positions that ask you to find the typical plans for White (thirteen puzzles) or Black (twenty-one puzzles). This system originated during a time when chess players “used to use their own heads to think,” and accordingly you are encouraged to “get your brain to work and come up with ideas,” as new concepts are constantly being discovered.

How to Crush Your Chess Opponents
Simon Williams

In this self-professed “inspiring guide for the modern attacker,” Simon Williams annotates thirty of his favorite attacking games. Two of the games feature Williams himself, while others are from such notable attackers as Topalov, Shirov, Polgar, and Hector. English GMs such as Gormally, Wells, Plaskett, and Short are also represented, among others.

The games were played between 1991 to the present day and are divided among the chapters Opening to the Middlgame, Keeping the Initiative, Harmonizing the Army, Locating the Weak Point, Changing the Tempo, All-In!, and Playing to Your Strength.

Williams notes that his aims in writing the book were “to show you some fascinating games” and to “help you understand how to hack up your opponents quickly!” Along the way he provides tips on attacking and defending, as well as how to calculate properly.

Beginners should buy this book for the lucid explanations as to how to form an attack. Strong players should buy it just for pure enjoyment, and for the fact that the diagrams are plentiful enough so as to barely need a board and pieces.
