Reviews in Brief

The Art of Attacking Chess
Zenon Franco

In the introduction, Franco explains that his aim is to examine the different stages of an attack, including the positional factors that require it, and not just the finishing combination. In order to obtain a “broader view and a better understanding” of these factors, he includes many supplementary games in addition to the thirty-three main games.

He writes that he “deliberately went for games that are not well known and widely annotated.” Each game is prefaced by a short introduction that outlines the main contours of what follows, and there is a recap of the key moments and lessons to be learned at the end of the game. The annotations often span four to six pages.

The chapters are divided by motif: the king in the center, opposite-side castling, same-side castling, exploiting temporary advantages, the Horwitz bishops, and miscellaneous themes. The latter includes the power of the f5-knight, maneuvering with the major pieces, and the pawn center. There are also seventy-three exercises for the reader to solve.

The material is quite dense and calls for a true commitment from the reader, if one is to get the most out of it.

The Easiest Sicilian
Atanas Kolev & Trajko Nedev

Calling one of the most theoretical variations of the Sicilian Defense “easy” certainly opens one up to ridicule, but the authors explain that “strategically, the Sveshnikov is a rather simple opening” that is easy to include the in one’s repertoire. They write that “Black’s plan is obvious,” and that “White aspires to a small positional advantage at best” in the main theoretical line, where they do not see any serious problems for Black.

However, the authors cover more than just the Sveshnikov. The first chapter (thirty-six pages) is devoted to the Rossolimo variation, the last is devoted to the Novosibirsk variation, and rare lines such as 3.c3 and 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 are examined as well. In all ten chapters are devoted to the Sveshnikov.

A “Quick Repertoire” section outlines the plans and ideas for both sides at the beginning of each chapter, the analysis follows in the “Step by Step” section, and this is followed by the “Complete Games.” There are thirty-seven total games.

The book is published by Chess Stars and printed in Bulgaria. The chess content is first-rate, but it does contain occasional grammatical errors.
