Book Notes  Botvinnik's Complete Games 1924-1941 is merely a "guide" to the history of 20th century chess. The material presented in this three-volume work, of which this is the first, is very diverse. Here there are analyses and compositions, pen-portraits and travel notes, and also creative problems. These books will also include all Botvinnik's known games (apart from the 381 already published in the Best Games series), with annotations by Botvinnik where available. The result will be a complete collection of Botvinnik's game annotations and the best of his chess writings. The match of the year between World Champion Vishy Anand and his challenger Veselin Topalov went the full distance, and yet at the end the decision was quite unexpected and came much more quickly than one might have thought. Reviews in Brief |  Power Play 13: The Squeeze
by Daniel King "The Squeeze" is the latest in Daniel King's series of Power Play DVDs. The DVD is structured in the same way as his last few Power Play endeavors. King begins by giving you test questions to which the DVD will assist you in providing the answers. He then goes over the actual answers at the end of the DVD. The main section of the DVD is devoted to games that have been divided according to their relation to the theme of immobilization. The games are suspended at a certain point, where you are then asked to guess the next move played. Most of the game are devoted to the white side of the picture, as black is the side that always seems to come out on the short end. The person for whom this DVD is aimed has an entire world that is opening up for him, and the prospective viewer should be sure to include print media, as well as a great deal of practical experience in their training regimen.
