Here & There

Seconds Please
This month Carsten Hansen looks at five chess books that are in their second edition. In addition, he also examines the latest Chess Informant, which has been changed quite a bit compared to earlier volumes.

Texas Tech
Sixty qualifiers from forty-four states are at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas to compete for the most prestigious all-girls national championship in the United States. Susan Polgar reports.

Left Behind
It is great to strive for the win, but it is difficult to have a perfect response to every opening. According to Gary Lane, there will be times when you have to fight your opponent on his territory, otherwise you will be left behind at the bottom of the tournament.

Mathematical Proof
In the Skittles Room, Dan Heisman postulates that one cannot make the position better by making a move. He notes that since evaluation assumes best play, then the best move must leave the evaluation unchanged.

Reviews in Brief

Scandinavian Defense, The Dynamic 3...Qd6, 2nd Edition
by Michael Melts

When Carsten Hansen reviewed the first edition of this book, he expressed surprise that it was even possible to fill 214 pages on this rarely played variation. Since then, the popularity of this line has absolutely exploded, so he’s not so surprised that this edition fills 301 pages.

As an example of how comprehensive this update is, there is only one main game that remains from the first edition, the rest are new. Furthermore, because of the surge in popularity, the names of the players in the main games are rather more recognizable in this edition.

As with the first edition, the abundance of original material will take the theory of this variation a great step further. If you play this line with black, or 1 e4 for white, you should certainly invest in this book.

Win with the Stonewall Dutch
by Sverre Johnsen and Ivar Bern

As Simen Agdestein tells it in the foreword, “the Stonewall is an opening for players who like to fight...”; it’s for players who like “to sit down and have an interesting battle...”; it’s an opening that “keeps your creativity alive” in which you can “find your own way of approaching the material.” He writes “if you want to do your fighting at home in your laboratory, play correspondence chess or the Najdorf.”

From the back cover we learn that “the authors are all from Norway. Sverre Johnsen is an enthusiastic chess analyst, researcher, organizer and writer, and co-author of Win with the London System [and] The Ruy Lopez: a Guide for Black. Ivar Bern is a Correspondence World Champion and an International Master over-the-board. Grandmaster Simen Agdestein was for many years Norway’s leading player, and also achieved fame for combining his chess activities with a career as a top-level professional footballer.”

Their goal is to provide Black with a complete repertoire based on the Dutch Modern Stonewall: 1 d4 f5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 g3 e6 4 Bg2 d5 5 0-0 Bd6 6 c4 c6. The contents are as follows:

Lesson 1 7 b3: Introduction 15
Lesson 2 The Critical 7 b3 Qe7 8 Ne5!
Lesson 3 7 Qc2, 7 Nc3 and Rare 7th Moves
Lesson 4 7 Bf4
Lesson 5 Lines with a Delayed Bf4
Lesson 6 Early Deviations
Lesson 7 4 c4 with Nh3
Lesson 8 2 c4: Non-Fianchetto Lines
Lesson 9 2 Nf3: Non-Fianchetto Lines
Lesson 10 2 Nc3 and 2 Bg5
Lesson 11 The Staunton Gambit and Rare 2nd Moves
Lesson 12 1 c4, 1 Nf3 and 1 g3

In addition, they note that the material is also pertinent to other variations in the Dutch as well as being important to the Semi-Slav Triangle system. Their aim is more than just presenting variations to be memorized; it is to “improve your general understanding of some important positional themes - in particular about flank play when the centre is stable but also how a theoretically 'bad bishop' occasionally can be superior to a theoretically 'good one.'”

At crucial points in the coverage the authors often offer Black at least two options: “one that is well explored and one which is more experimental.” They also point out moves for Black for independent research and provide a number of exercises to test your thematic knowledge.
