Book Notes
Play the DutchThere's no doubt that the Dutch Defence is one of Black's most enterprising openings. Black strives to unbalance the position by creating an asymmetrical pawn structure on the very first move, giving himself every opportunity to fight for the initiative from the outset. It's no surprise that the Dutch particularly appeals to ambitious players who relish a complicated battle. In Play the Dutch, Neil McDonald tells you everything you need to know in order to play this opening successfully: the best lines to choose, the fundamental ideas for both sides, the traps you can set and the pitfalls to avoid, and the move order subtleties which play such an important role in the modern game. McDonald provides a comprehensive repertoire based around the dynamic Leningrad Variation. Read a free excerpt in our shop!
In the new ebook, Alekhine Alert, IM Timothy Taylor takes a contemporary look at one of Black's most ambitious counters to 1 e4, the Alekhine Defence. This is a sharp opening in which Black attacks from the very beginning, luring White's central pawns forward in the expectation of destroying them later on. The Alekhine is a favourite among creative players such as Nigel Short, Vassily Ivanchuk and Hikaru Nakamura. Download a free sample in our shop!

Reviews in Brief
The Quality Chess Puzzle Book claims to be "a little different from what the reader expects." It tends to begin the action a little earlier than usual, before the finishing blow is administered. "The reader thus has to find the introductory moves that make the tactic work," making the puzzle more like a real game. The author also includes "snippets of relevant chess knowledge" in the solutions, rather than just unannotated answers.
The book is structured with puzzles on the right-facing page, indicating which side is to move, with solutions on the following page. It offers 735 puzzles, with more than 700 from after the year 2000. The chapters are arranged by theme in order of increasing difficulty, with chapter fifteen, "Brain Crushers," described as "very nasty indeed."
One unusual aspect of QCPB is that Shaw lists sources for some of the puzzles; another is the "Contributions from our Readers" section, in which the author quips, "I hope this will create a new business model in chess publishing where our readers do all the work and I reap the benefits." He notes "the level of difficulty is lower than later in the book, so this chapter is a useful warm-up for what is to come."
The Quality Chess Puzzle Book lives up to its name!
