Book Notes
Between 1984 and 1990 Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov contested five long matches for the World Championship. This fourth volume of the series 'Garry Kasparov on Modern Chess' concentrates on all the games played between the two from 1988 to the present day and features their fifth World Championship match played in New York and Lyon 1990. The period after 1990 was also a fascinating one in the chess world as it witnessed the emergence of a new generation of young grandmasters capable of challenging the supremacy of the two 'K's'. Between them these great champions had dominated the chess landscape for the previous two decades and it has seemed unthinkable that a major tournament could be won by a different player. Now, however, grandmasters such as Viswanathan Anand, Vassily Ivanchuk, Nigel Short, Boris Gelfand, Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov arrived on the scene and proved themselves capable of competing successfully at the very highest levels. Reviews in Brief
Chess Duels
by Yasser Seirawan
Since winning the World Junior Championship in 1979, Yasser Seirawan has been involved in a remarkable number of the inside doings in the chess world. He was instrumental in the Prague Agreement, which successfully averted near-success in reuniting the world championship (I think that sentence about captures the Herculean nature of the task Seirawan set himself), as well as publishing Inside Chess for many years and, along the way, putting out some terrific instructional books. This one, from Everyman Chess, can be described as his chess memoir.
It's an unusual book. Offhand, it's hard to think of many other chess memoirs. The closest is probably Life and Games of Mikhail Tal, although Susan Polgar's book, Breaking Through, on herself and her two sisters bears some similarities, as does Chess Bitch. This is the story of two decades spent perilously near the chess summit, in the crowd of grandmasters who today would include Nakamura, Almasi, and Nisipeanu – not quite world titlists, but also not the sort you want to see cracking their knuckles and grinning across the board at you in a weekend Swiss. After twenty years in that heady company, a player ought to have a rich stock of anecdotes and colorful stories.
Now I enjoy chess as much as the next guy, but it's unusual for me to enjoy a chess games collection quite as thoroughly as I did this one. Why? Because Seirawan puts me right at the moment of action. Over and over, as in this anecdote, Seirawan brings his reader so close to the action that we might as well have been on the Olympic team, or in Korchnoi's living room, or any of the other fascinating places Seirawan describes. I remember a comment about C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower novels, that when Forester writes about a Napoleonic sea battle, the reader can smell the salt air and gunsmoke. In this book, the reader can hear the clock ticking, feel the sweat beading, see the opponent staring.
