Book Notes
Planning is critical to winning in chess. While other writers offer you thinking tools for building an effective plan, in Chess Blueprints: Planning in the Middlegame Nikolay Yakovlev gives you the bricks – the positional themes and patterns that you need to know in order to make use of those fancy tools. With 188 positions and 559 diagrams ranging from the classics to little-known gems of Russian chess, the author challenges you to form your own impression and then see how the masters honed in on the key elements to achieve victory, or neglected them and went down to defeat. Should you castle, or press the attack? Are rolling center pawns worth a piece? Where does determination end and obstinacy begin? Far from a dry listing of ideas and examples, Chess Blueprints: Planning in the Middlegame is a rich collection of strategic tips and psychological advice to help you conduct the attack, defeat your opponent's aggression, and cash in on a tiny endgame advantage.
The KGB Plays Chess is a unique book. For the first time it opens to us some of the most secret pages of the history of chess. The battles about which you will read in this book are not between chess masters sitting at the chess board, but between the powerful Soviet secret police, known as the KGB, on the one hand, and several brave individuals, on the other.

Reviews in Brief
Chess in Action
by Paul Mantell and Dean Ippolito
In this delightful new book, the game of chess is presented as a battle between two opposing armies, with the players being the commanding generals. Especially for younger readers, the thought of actually being in charge of something will be an appealing attraction.
The many large and original "three dimensional" illustrations are a treat for the eyes and add to the excitement of learning new skills. The same text, but without the illustrations, would still be enjoyable, but would be something akin to a movie without its almost subliminal soundtrack. It would lack pizzazz.
A helpful glossary is included, as well as a useful list of Internet resources (although the first entry here is actually a misplaced bibliographic notation).
This book is intended for players without any significant playing experience; for beginners, it is an attractive and enticing introduction to the game we love. The playful writing by Mantell and Ippolito, coupled with the masterful illustrations by Giacomo Marchesi, makes this an easy-to-use and enjoyable first introduction to chess.
