Mega Database 2010
by ChessBase

In chess, as with many other activities, it is the side with the best information that often comes out on top. Thus, chess players seek to have the latest, greatest information at their fingertips. One means of accessing high quality information is Mega Database 2010, with ChessBase 10 a key tool in sorting and utilizing this information. The database contains more than 4.5 million games from 1560 to 2009, with 65,000 games containing commentary from top players.

The most recent games are from the middle of November 2009, but with ChessBase 10 you can download games for Mega 2010 for the whole year, providing a supplement of approximately 200,000 up-to-date games! This keeps Mega 2010 current until December 2010. The games of the database are sorted into the ChessBase "SuperKey." This is based on the Informant ECO classification and contains 106,707 individual categories of opening lines. However, it has always been a mystery to me as to why the New In Chess openings key has not been adopted as the worldwide standard, as it is a far superior system.

The Mega Database 2010 allows different forms of access via the use of tabs. When you first open the database, the tab "Text "is activated. Click on "Games" and you get the full list of 4,463,293 games and texts.

For those who are interested in just the bare gamescores sans annotations, the Big Database 2010 is available for less than half the price of Mega 2010. However, the difference between the two is like having a dictionary with definitions as opposed to just a list of words.
