Book Notes

One of the highlights of New In Chess 2009/6 is Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam’s interview with Hikaru Nakamura. Nakamura’s left behind an unhappy period in his life and gotten rid of “the distractions.” His new approach seems to be working, as he proved again in San Sebastian.

In Understanding Chess Endgames, GM John Nunn provides everything you need to know about chess endgames! Assuming no specialized endgame knowledge, he presents 100 key concepts, and explains how they are used to win games or save difficult positions.

Reviews in Brief

Understanding Chess Endgames
by John Nunn, Gambit Publications, 2009, Paperback, 232pp. $24.95

Dr. John Nunn is one of the most logical and articulate writers on chess. He has a knack for writing to his audience in a clear and cogent manner. Thus, it’s no wonder that his books are largely critically-acclaimed and many have won Book of the Year awards in various countries. In Understanding Chess Endgames, Nunn presents 100 key endgame concepts and how to utilize them in practice.

In the introduction he writes, “This book had an unusual genesis in that originally I didn’t intend to write it at all. I was starting work on a more advanced book on endgames, and while I was collecting material for this, I began to compile a list of all the things the reader would be assumed to know. The idea was that an introductory chapter would give a brief survey of this “presumed knowledge” so that I would not have to explain it in the main body of the book. However, it quickly became clear that this “introductory chapter” would be more like a book in itself, so I put the main project to one side and started to think about how this introductory chapter could be turned into a useful book.”

This is one of the finest endgame books to be published and readers who take the time to master these concepts will see an immediate surge in playing strength. For some books this can be seen as an empty claim, for Understanding Chess Endgames it is a simple statement of fact. We can also look forward to the book Nunn intended to write in the first place.
