Here & There

Topping Capa
Bruce Pandolfini is surprised by the sudden influx of questions regarding Jose Capabalnca. He shares a number of unusual yarns and is set straight on certain matters. Plus, you can answer Bruce’s question of the month.

Newborn Wonder
The third chapter of Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel The Defense is about the wonderful time between wanting to play chess and really playing, the time when everything in chess is new. For Hans Ree that time is closely connected with the German chess manual Lehrbuch des Schachspiels.

Bc4 Paralysis
In an 1864 article Adolph Anderssen expressed his “conviction that 2 Bc4 paralyzes the nerve of the Sicilian Defense.” However, Stefan Buecker believes that the old master with his knack for 2 Bc4 would surely have refined his move-order and played 2 Nc3 first.

Reviews in Brief

Power Play 9: Major Pieces vs. Minor Pieces (DVD)
by Daniel King

GM Daniel King’s popular Power Play series has previously presented such subjects as mating patterns, attacking the king, pawn play, piece placement, and minor piece endgames. In this ninth Power Play DVD, King looks at positions that feature an odd material balance: queen vs. rook and minor piece or queen vs. two minor pieces (five segments), or rook against two minor pieces (three segments), or rook against a bishop or knight. The latter segments are the most plentiful and King examines seven games over the span of eleven videos.

The fritztrainer format works by showing a video of the presenter in one window, a chessboard in another and a notation window for the moves. The moves and variations on the board are synchronized with the video and the format allows the presenter to highlight important squares or use colored arrows to further clarify exactly what’s happening on the board.

King explains the material and concepts very well, making this DVD useful for self-training as well as for providing coaches with exercise material or lesson plans. In all there are twenty-two video segments with a running time of about four hours and fifteen minutes. The focus on the exchange sacrifice in this installment of the Power Play series will be of great practical interest to the average player.

Chess Explained: The Main-Line Slav
by David Vigorito

IM Vigorito writes that “the purpose of this work is to give the reader a good understanding of all the lines arising after 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3 dxc4.” He notes that it is not intended as a theoretical manual, though he does “delve into the complicated theoretical lines when necessary, especially in the most critical and topical variations.”

Vigorito has been playing the Slav for more than a decade and believes “that an understanding of the structures and piece-play will be the leading factor in the reader’s success when employing this opening.” He indicates that many of the top players who play the Slav do so with both colors, attesting to its soundness and variety of positions.

After a move-by-move introduction of the basic set up, Vigorito examines over the course of twenty-five games the Dutch Variation (pp. 78-95), the Central Variation (pp. 42-77), the Bronstein & Smyslov Variations (pp. 78-95), and the Quiet 5 e3 and Geller Gambit (pp. 96-108). This book is a very good introduction to the Main Line Slav and is recommended to any level player who wishes to become acquainted with it.
