Back to Basics
In this month’s Opening Lanes, IM Gary Lane looks at opening traps in the Two Knights Defense, as well as the London System in the King’s Indian Defense, and a pawn sacrifice in the French Advance Variation that has yet to catch on in international events.

Mixed Bag
Carsten Hansen looks at a mixed bag of recent releases this month. Serious players will enjoy the new volume of ECO E and the New In Chess Yearbook, while lower ranked players may benefit from the new book on the c3 Sicilian by Emms or the new DVD on the Tarrasch by Davies.

A Look Back
Susan Polgar kicks off the New Year with a brief recap of some of the biggest chess events of 2008. She also annotates two games that could qualify for Game of the Year.

Book Notes

The fourth thoroughly revised and updated edition of the ECO E, brings an additional 144 pages of brand new material. This 672 page volume includes games and analyses from Chess Informants 1-101 and focuses on popular openings from the Indian systems, Catalan, and others.

The “21st Century Edition” of New York 1924 by Alexander Alekhine will soon be available. All 110 tournament games are deeply annotated by the future world champion, who imbues this classic tournament book with personality. It is the stuff of legend.

Our January $9.95 Sale is a great way to experience big savings on some great books. We have no less than nine volumes of Chess Informant discounted more than $26.00 and a dozen other best selling titles all available for just $9.95!

Reviews in Brief

Chess Brilliancy
by Iakov Damsky

The author explores how the concept of the brilliancy came into being and how it has developed over time. He then presents an array of brilliant games, including many that were selected by the GM panels for each issue of the Chess Informant between 1968 and 1998.

Prefacing some of the games is a brief description of the voting results and information regarding the selection of the chosen game, as well as an occasional anecdote about its origins. This obviously chronicles some of the best chess from recent decades. While some of the material may be well known to serious devotees and a great deal of the analysis is reprinted from other sources, the 219 games that make up this collection are well worth becoming acquainted with.

Curse of Kirsan
by Sarah Hurst

Curse is a collection of Hurst’s previously published magazine articles from the British magazine Chess, New In Chess, and Kingpin. They profile chess personalities such as Alekhine, Botvinnik, Kasparov, and Karpov, as well as lesser luminaries, and it includes previously unpublished compositions on Raymond Keene, Leonard Barden, Bob Wade, and George Steiner.

The title takes itself from her essay on FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and his alleged involvement in the murder of a Kalmykian newspaper editor named Larisa Yudina, who was a fierce critic of Kirsan’s leadership as President of Kalmykia and was investigating the possible misappropriation of government funds. One of the men arrested in connection with the killing was a former aide to Ilyumzhinov.

Though the book contains no games or diagrams, it is likely to be one chess book you read cover to cover.
