Coin Toss
To decide between two equivalent possibilities, tossing a coin seems more rational than spending a lot of time on an unsolvable problem. In this month’s Dutch Treat, Hans Ree considers the psychological impact of this attractive time-saving device.

Boxing Day
If you have ever been curious about chess boxing, then our Video Spotlight will explain the rules. It features highlights from the World Chess Boxing Championships in Germany.

Reference Guide
Last month Steve Lopez began an examination of the tabs at the top of the ChessBase 10 Notation pane, beginning with the Notation, Table, Training, and Scoresheet views. This month he describes what happens when you click on the Reference tab.

Book Notes

Daniel King’s eighth Power Play DVD, will give you a better idea of how to play positions with knights and bishops - what to look for, what to avoid, and how to place your pawns. The Power Play series is suitable for anyone looking to improve their chess, but also provides ready-made lessons and exercises for trainers.

The big story in ChessBase Magazine #127 is the world championship match in Bonn. Vishy Anand has annotated his third and fifth game victories in Fritztrainer format and GM Rogozenko provides in-depth analysis of all the important games in video format.

“Lasker was both a great fighter and a deep thinker. His book forms the quintessence of many years of exceptionally successful experience, and his thoughts on the same. It teaches you what he considers to be most important, general principles and methods applicable to any situation. Once you have read the Manual, you will become wiser, which is bound to help you later on, both in chess and in life.” - From the Foreword by Mark Dvoretsky

Reviews in Brief

Anti-Sicilians: A Guide for Black
by Dorian Rogozenko

It is due to the Sicilian Defense that statistically 1.e4 is not “best by test.” However, many White players bypass the Open Sicilian with an Anti-Sicilian system. Rogozenko has based this book on his lifetime of experience against Anti-Sicilians, which he deems objectively weaker than the Open Sicilian.

He declares the “Anti-Sicilians do not bring an opening advantage for White” and that his goal is to provide “a complete, objective, safe and well-organized repertoire for Black.” He caters for those who meet 2.Nf3 with either, 2...d6, 2...e6 or 2...Nc6 and provides a choice between a solid and an aggressive option in the most critical variations. The Anti-Sicilian systems include lines such as the Grand Prix Attack, the Smith-Morra Gambit, the 2 c3 Sicilian, the 3 Bb5 systems, the King’s Indian Attack, and others.
