Russell’s Resources
This month Karsten Mueller examines two interesting minor piece endgames from the U.S. Amateur Championship and presents some new insights on an ending from Botvinnik-Bronstein, 1951.

Seville 1987
Our most recent Video Spotlight features footage from Game 23 of the Kasparov-Karpov match in Seville. Watch for our very own Geurt Gijssen, who was the match arbiter, to make an appearance around the 3:10 mark.

Decisions, Decisions
This month Novice Nook columnist Dan Heisman concentrates on a thought process that facilitates making more effective decisions. After all, chess is a thinking game, and when good players take a long time on their move, the one thing they are likely doing is making decisions.

Book Notes

For the Weekly Holiday Special December 15-21, we are pleased to offer the Pro-Line Chessmen in three versions: Ebonized, Rosewood and Golden Sheesham for the incredibly low price of $69.95 plus shipping. That is a savings of up to $50.00.

The latest issue of New In Chess magazine features extensive coverage of the world championship match between Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik, which ended in a resounding victory for the Indian super-GM. It contains interviews, game analysis, commentary, and more.

“Lasker was both a great fighter and a deep thinker. His book forms the quintessence of many years of exceptionally successful experience, and his thoughts on the same. It teaches you what he considers to be most important, general principles and methods applicable to any situation. Once you have read the Manual, you will become wiser, which is bound to help you later on, both in chess and in life.” - From the Foreword by Mark Dvoretsky

Reviews in Brief

How to Build Your Chess Opening Repertoire
by Steve Giddins

Many of the chess professionals that reviewed this work were ecstatic about it. It seems the Sadler’s and Silman’s saw in this book a shortcut to some of the knowledge that they had to learn from hard experience.

Giddins argues that too many players spend too much time on openings, without knowing how to study them or how to form a repertoire. “The negative results of this extend to the whole of one’s game,” he says, because we neglect other areas. His answer is to select openings that suit your style and that don’t require more study than you have time for.

Such common sense advice is plentiful as Giddins tackles questions such as whether to play main lines and how to use computers, etc. He also explains the concept of using “role models” and investigates the repertoires of leading players past and present.

Can You Be A Positional Chess Genius?
by Angus Dunnington

IM Dunnington has assembled 150 puzzles, in fifteen tests, to quiz players of all levels. He notes that all the tests are similarly difficult and that hopefully the reader will score higher on the later tests, thereby showing an improvement of positional understanding.

At the beginning of each chapter the puzzles are easier and worth five points for a correct solution. As you progress they become more difficult and the point value increases. If you are stumped you can “ask a Grandmaster” to obtain a hint, but this will cost you points. You can also score points for finding the basic idea of the solution without necessarily working out all the refinements.

Some of the examples are real and some have been fabricated, but all are “designed to make positional considerations come more naturally.” He writes that it makes “more sense to broaden your horizon by getting acquainted with real chess” than by reading any number of opening specific books.
