Reviews in Brief

Interview with a Grandmaster
Aaron & Claire Summerscale

In this book Claire Summerscale engagingly interviews nine grandmasters on a broad range of topics. They are Adams, Short, Seirawan, Khalifman, Lautier, J. Polgar, Hodgson, Sutovsky, and Rowson.

Each grandmaster notes their best game and what game they think is the best ever played, a good many of the latter are games by Kasparov. Many of the GMs mentioned the same game and so had to choose a new one.

Aaron Summerscale then annotates all of the games. This is a good general interest chess book.

How to Become a Deadly Chess Tactician
David LeMoir

The author states that “better tactics mean better results” and he offers three factors to improving tactical vision: motivation, having the willingness to sacrifice and to consider tactical ideas; imagination, being aware of tactical concepts that lead to ideas which other players might miss; and calculation, being able to analyze and calculate effectively.

He begins by going back to the days of Morphy and Anderssen and tracing the history of tactics to the present day. Other topics include silent sacrifices, brilliant blunders, and how not to calculate combinations.

At the end of each topic there are three different levels of exercises (78 total) and it finishes with a series of three tests containing 36 exercises. Recommended for all players.
