New at Chess Life Online

Jessica Lauser writes about the 2008 U.S. Blind Championship (June 20-21), where she placed third despite suffering a number of misadventures. Plus, Elizabeth Vicary reports on the most recent session of the U.S. Chess School, led by GM Gregory Kaidanov and organized by IM Greg Shahade. Read about the players and test yourself on some key exercises from Kaidanov’s lectures.

Book Notes

In How to Crush Your Chess Opponents, GM Simon Williams annotates his favorite attacking games from the modern era. He takes us inside the decision-making process and explains how top players know when to launch on an all-out assault.

If you want to be a well-rounded chess player, it is vital that you have a good understanding of positional play. In the DVD Power Play 6: Pawns, Pieces & Plans, GM Daniel King discusses three classic questions: the isolated queen’s pawn, central passed pawns, and when to exchange pawns or not.

Arthur Bisguier is a living legend in American chess,
having met and defeated some of the greatest players
in the world. This is a collection of his best games -
annotated by Bisguier himself - from 1961 through 2003.

Reviews in Brief

Chess Informant 1-100 (CD)

The Mother of All Game Collections Has Arrived! All the games from the first 100 volumes of Chess Informant have been collected onto one CD. You will find over 101,000 games, each and every one with the original, deep annotations.

The list of annotators alone is staggering. How would you like to have over 500 games games annotated by Tigran Petrosian? Almost 370 by Tal? Over 600 by Kasparov and over 450 by Anand? All original, all written specifically for Chess Informant. That’s just a small part of what you will find on this CD. To make it even easier to access, the games are presented in four different formats: ChessBase, Chess Assistant, Chess Informant Expert and PGN.

This is not an inexpensive database, but you might well want to consider clearing your bookshelves, firing up your PC, and enjoying some of the greatest chess played in the last four decades.

Secrets of Chess Intuition
Alexander Beliavsky & Adrian Mikhalchishin

This book, said to be the first devoted to this subject, attempts to explain how to develop your intuition to its maximum potential and provides guidance on the types of positions in which one should rely on intuition, and on those requiring deeper analysis.

The authors suggest that there are three types of intuition in chess: combinative, positional, and psychological. While they do not define intuition themselves, they do offer a number of definitions from players such as Anand, Kramnik, Sosonko, and Gelfand, as well as from various scientist or psychologists. And if Sosonko’s recommendation of developing intuition through study of the most diverse games is anywhere close to the mark, then this book can be a useful tool in improving one’s game.

The focus tends to be on dynamic features and sacrifices, but there are discussions of intuitive prophylaxis, sense of danger, and improving the worst placed piece. Other topics include psychological factors, intuition in the opening and endgame, plus there are contributions from Suetin and Ivanchuk.
