Book Notes

Study is a necessity for competitive chess players, and acclaimed chess author and International Grandmaster Andrew Soltis explains how it should be done in Studying Chess Made Easy. In his trademark witty, accessible style, Soltis provides tips on everything from the need for memorization to the use of computers-and even how to develop that indefinable thing called intuition. A great book for players or coaches!

In Beating 1 e4 e5, grandmaster John Emms presents a repertoire for White after 1 e4 e5, based on the Italian Game and the Bishop's Opening. The lines he recommends are built upon a sound yet aggressive system of development which can be deployed against virtually every Black defense.

Reviews in Brief

Elements of Positional Evaluation
by Dan Heisman

The topic of positional evaluation is often a difficult one for beginners to broach. In Elements of Positional Evaluation: How the Pieces Get Their Power, NM Dan Heisman presents the subject in such a clear and accessible way that even a player with only the most basic comprehension of chess theory can improve their understanding. The book is useful both in the realm of the purely theoretical and in its practical application over-the-board.

Static and dynamic positions play a large role in Elements of Positional Evaluation, and Heisman explains these two concepts with crystal clear, if somewhat extreme examples. A static evaluation of a position does not take into account who is to play, nor does it attempt to encompass potential moves for either side. Adversely, a dynamic appraisal would consider aspects like whose move it is, and what moves could be made from the position.

Elements of Positional Evaluation is an informative read for someone looking to study these concepts and their practical application to the pieces in isolation, and in the broader scope of overall board coordination. The diagrams are clear and illustrative. Heisman's explanations are concise and his language is accessible to those who are not familiar with chess theory.
