Book Notes

Nigel Short is generally regarded as the strongest British grandmaster of the twentieth century. At the age of fourteen, he became the youngest IM in history, breaking Bobby Fischer's previous record, and at sixteen he came second (to Garry Kasparov) at the under 20 World Junior Championship in Dortmund. He went on to challenge Garry Kasparov in a title match in London, and since then he has remained active at the highest levels of competitive chess. He is considered one of the most entertaining and outspoken personalities in the chess world. In this DVD of "Greatest Hits" Nigel takes us on an electrifying journey through a very rich chess career, which saw him beat no less than twelve world champions. His experience in tournaments and matches all over the world can be seen in the narratives that precede the games, which he annotates with humor and instructive insights.

In Starting Out: Open Games, Glenn Flear goes back to basics, introducing the key moves and ideas, and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them - something that has often been neglected or taken for granted in other works. He places particular emphasis on the lines that players are most likely to face.

Reviews in Brief

Shredder 12.0
by ChessBase

I spend a great deal of time studying and playing chess. It is with Fritz that I go over my mistakes and reassure myself of the moves that I deemed correct. So, it was with great anticipation that I waited for Shredder 12 to arrive. According to programmer Stefan Meyer Kahlen, the engine is 100 Elo points stronger than Shredder 11. I will now take you on a little tour of my experiences with my new chess partner.

I found Shredder to be a marvelous tool for study and analysis. You can use the various functions to analyze positions or full games, and utilize the training functions to calculate positions and root out errors in your judgment. For the club player these functions are without peer. The training functions include everything from the opening to the endgame. It will explain all the move possibilities available, or explain the reasons for defensive moves, or provide tactical considerations. It will show all pieces that are not defended properly, as well as all pieces that can deliver check. These are things that you simply cannot get from a book.

Finally, I would like to note that I make almost as much use of the database function in Shredder and Fritz as I do with ChessBase. The filtering processes are identical to ChessBase and it seems to take less time to find the games I want. All in all Shredder is a great product. I can only think of two products that I simply could not live without. They are ChessBase and Shredder (or Fritz). Moreover, for chess fanatics like me, the Fritz PowerBook 2010 is almost as necessary, just so you can analyze the slight differences in modes of play and study the moves.
