In the endgame, everybody makes mistakes! As Mark Dvoretsky relates, solid endgame knowledge may not guarantee that you’ll always find the right move, but at least it will increase your chances of success.

Book Notes

The Sokolsky Opening can be weird and wacky, but Jerzy Konikowski and Marek Soszynski prove it is also safe and sound in their comprehensive coverage (more than 300 pages!) of this slightly off-beat opening. 1.b4: Theory and Practice of the Sokolsky Opening is exclusively at ChessCafe.com! This book is packed with fresh analysis and ninety-five illustrative games.

The Two Knights Defence is back in stock. Openings theoretician Jan Pinski guides the reader through both the well-trodden paths of the main lines, plus the less fashionable side variations of this most complex opening. Using illustrative games, Pinski studies the key ideas and tactics for both Black and White.

Reviews in Brief

The Wisest Things Ever Said about Chess
by Andy Soltis

In his latest book, American grandmaster Andy Soltis blazes a new trail. (This is something rather remarkable for a chess book in and of itself.) He has collected sayings, statements, maxims and then has given an annotated example illustrating the point. The material is divided into 17 chapters: (1) Attack; (2) Calculation; (3) Defense; (4) Endgame; (5) Evaluation; (6) Mistakes; (7) Move Selection; (8) Openings; (9) Pawns; (10) Pieces; (11) Psychology; (12) Sacrifice; (13) Strategy; (14) Studying; (15) Tactics; (16) Technique; and (17) Tournament Tactics.

There is typically one page, with a diagrammed position, that is devoted to each of the 288 “wisest things” presented by Soltis. Most players who have followed the game more than superficially will recognize many of these “sayings.” These positions are lightly annotated, but with a breezy insight that makes them both instructive and a good read.

Soltis has brought together almost three hundred maxims, laws, principles - call them what you will - with examples annotated in his easy-to-read, yet instructive style. It is satisfying to see so many of the “rules” we all cut our teeth on illustrated with clear examples and readable notes. Annotated pearls indeed...

Power Play 8: Knights and Bishops
by Daniel King

In this eighth Power Play DVD, GM Daniel King examines positions in which knights battle against bishops. He notes in the introduction that this is an incredibly important theme that touches upon any opening you may play. One of his aims is to equip the reader to be able to discern the true value of each piece in any given position, as the standard value of three points can only be taken as a very rough guide, since in certain positions one piece or the other is clearly superior.

He begins by showing a few simplified positions that demonstrate the main characteristics of the knights and bishops. First he presents an endgame study by Averbakh in which the bishop proves to be more useful than the knight and then an endgame study by Troitsky where the knight displays its superiority. But his discussions encompass much more than that. He also talks about various positional factors, such as pawn structure, weak squares and how to place your pawns to compliment your pieces.

This is not just for beginners, even club and tournament players will learn much more than they may anticipate. King does a good job of making the material easy to understand and making complex concepts seem simple. In all there are twenty-three video segments with a running time of about four hours.
