Reviews in Brief

Catastrophe in the Opening
by James Plaskett

This book features eighty-eight mostly miniature games. All well-annotated with the aim to help the readers avoid similar pitfalls in their own games.

There are seven chapters: poisoned pawns, castling into it, trapping the queen, theory, attacks on the uncastled king, structural superiority, and eye off the ball.

If you want to learn how to punish your opponent’s poor opening play, then this book can certainly assist you. It also stands as an entertaining games collection.

The Grandmaster’s Mind
Amatzia Avni

This book investigates how chess players think and what differentiates the experts from the novices. It seeks to answer why some people are more skilled than others and how this difference expresses itself.

Avni, a psychologist by profession, interviews top players and analysts such as Boris Gelfand, Yona Kosashvili, and Lev Psakhis. The dialogue focuses on their most interesting and instructive games or compositions, if the subject happens to be a problem composer.

Avni allows his interviewees to relate their own thoughts and explain how they made decisions during critical moments of the game. He also presents them with unfamiliar positions and records their reactions. He then provides an overview of what was said, and provides some insights and recommendations in chapters such as The Thinking of GMs, A System for Problem-solving, and Critical Success Factors.
