New at Chess Life Online

FM Todd Andrews reports from the Tennessee Open in Crossville where he tied for first with IM Ron Burnett. Both earned their sixth TN state title. Also, Abby Marshall blogs from the Atlantic Open. Her tumultuous tournament included nightmares on the c6-square, winning on time and a patient victory.

Book Notes

In February 1909, nineteen of the world’s best chessplayers gathered to play in one of the strongest tournaments of that era. World Champion Emanuel Lasker annotated all 175 games for the tournament book, St. Petersburg 1909, which is now available for the first time in algebraic notation.

The world’s strongest chess engine now has an interface to call its own. Rybka 3 Aquarium offers unprecedented analysis features, state of the art chess trees, a database with more than 3,000,000 games, and more. Rybka’s estimated rating is 3150!

Reviews in Brief

Chess Training Pocket Book II
by Lev Alburt & Al Lawrence

Alburt & Lawrence are back with CTPBII. Its portable size makes it perfect for carrying along in a bag, case, or pocket. It offers 320 positions for solving, four on each left-hand page, with the solutions on the facing right-hand page. Other than the side to move, no clues are provided as to which motif or tactic is needed to solve a particular puzzle. In fact, some puzzles are simply prophylactic, and you must find the best defensive move, rather than a winning combination.

The puzzles are taken from real games, studies, and instructive positions. There is an index of games, an index of themes & ideas, as well as a section that defines the twelve most important tactics. The authors recommend giving yourself just one or two minutes per position to train your intuition, or twenty minutes per puzzle to train your analytical ability. Many of the puzzles are as recent as 2007-8, while others are classics that date back as far as 1858.

Secrets of Opening Preparation
Mark Dvoretsky & Artur Yusupov

This is the second volume in the School of Future Champions series. It is an updated edition of Opening Preparation, first published by Batsford in 1994. This edition features a better translation, a more spacious layout with a greater amount of diagrams, analytical corrections, and an expanded chapter on the King’s Indian Attack.

The material is based on lessons presented at the Dvoretsky & Yusupov chess school, with contributions from Sergey Dolmatov, Yuri Razuvaev, Boris Zlotnik, Alexey Kosikov, and Vladimir Vulfson. Topics include the general principles of opening play, surprises in the opening, solving opening problems, developing a repertoire, game preparation, opening research and novelties, the connection of the opening to the endgame, and more.

In the introduction Dvoretsky writes, “to achieve genuine mastery in playing the opening stage of the game ... you need to study the methods of opening preparation in general, reflect on the typical problems which other players encounter, and independently analyse opening systems.” This is high-level training material designed for strong players.
